  • Awesome Artists and Actors: Further Adventures with the Fillm Coop

The word “awesome” has been culturally downgraded over the last 25 years or so.  When I was growing up awesome things were like burning bushes in the wilderness, seeing the view from Mount Everest, scoping out the latest shots through the Hubble Telescope, being there at the birth of your child or having the mothership from Close Encounters of the Third Kind suddenly appear over your driveway.

Today “awesome” is use to describe something that you think is really nice or pretty impressive.  Case in point, a young person called me awesome yesterday.  Now, I can be nice sometimes and I have even been impressive on very rare occasions.  But I am never going show up on view through the Hubble and I am not as big as an alien mothership.

But I want to describe the dedicated young women and men of the Film Coop as awesome and in its original sense.  They are so brave and impressive it simply staggers me sometimes.

Yesterday they set up a “Pitch Your Project” worskshop with Bob Kane of Soup Can Productions and for a measely $15 ($30 if you’re not a member).  I’ve been involved with many, many creative and media projects over the years and this was one of the most enlightening and useful professional development exercises I’ve ever been involved with.

I’m not going to tell you too much more about the workshop because I think you will best benefit by going to the next one they hold.  If you watch this space or my Facebook page or join the Film Coop’s Facebook’s page at https://www.facebook.com/FilmcoopTO — you can learn about their next event.

See you then — and enjoy the Oscars tonight — it won’t be long before you see these people you there holding statues.
